The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) joins the people of The Gambia in paying heartfelt tribute to Hon. Chief Justice Hassan B. Jallow on the occasion of his retirement from the Judiciary after decades of exemplary service to our nation and the international community.

His retirement marks the conclusion of an extraordinary career characterized by integrity, wisdom, scholarship, and an unwavering commitment to justice, constitutionalism, and the rule of law.

For the People’s Progressive Party, Justice Hassan B. Jallow is not only one of the country’s most distinguished legal minds but also a devoted Party member whose contributions helped shape the Party’s intellectual, educational, and institutional development.

Justice Jallow joined the People’s Progressive Party in 1984 and quickly became an active participant in the Party’s affairs. He served as a member of the Party Secretariat, the Central Committee, and the National Executive Committee, where he contributed to policy formulation, strategic planning, and organizational development.

Recognizing his exceptional legal expertise and intellectual capacity, the Party entrusted him with several important responsibilities. He served in the PPP Political Education Unit, helping to educate members on democratic governance, constitutionalism, public administration, and the Party’s philosophy of national development.

He also served on the Board of The Gambia Times, the official newspaper of the People’s Progressive Party, where he contributed to promoting informed public debate, civic education, and responsible journalism in support of democratic values.

Throughout his years of service, Justice Jallow was appointed to several Party Steering Committees established to undertake special assignments and strategic missions. His sound judgment, professionalism, and commitment earned him the confidence and respect of the Party leadership.

One of his most enduring contributions to the Party was his membership on the PPP Editorial Commission, which was tasked with documenting the history of the People’s Progressive Party from 1959 to 1989. The publication produced by the Commission remains one of the most authoritative accounts of the Party’s history, documenting the struggle for self-government, the attainment of Independence, nation-building, democratic governance, and the socio-economic transformation of The Gambia under PPP leadership. It continues to serve as an invaluable historical resource for students, researchers, policymakers, and all Gambians seeking to understand the country’s political and developmental journey.

During the administration of President Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara, Justice Hassan B. Jallow also rendered distinguished service to the Government of The Gambia. He was appointed Solicitor General and was later elevated to the office of Attorney General and Minister of Justice, a position he served with distinction for ten years. Throughout his tenure, he played a pivotal role in strengthening the administration of justice, advancing constitutional governance, and upholding the rule of law. His leadership helped reinforce The Gambia’s reputation as a nation committed to democratic principles, judicial independence, and respect for human rights.

Following his distinguished national service, Justice Jallow was called to serve the international community in several senior legal positions, where he represented The Gambia with exceptional distinction. Through his work in international criminal justice, accountability, and the promotion of the rule of law, he brought great honor and recognition to our country on the global stage.

His eventual appointment as Chief Justice of The Gambia crowned a lifetime devoted to justice, public service, and the strengthening of democratic institutions. Throughout his judicial career, he remained a symbol of professionalism, impartiality, judicial independence, and fidelity to the Constitution.

Justice Hassan B. Jallow’s life reflects the ideals upon which the People’s Progressive Party was founded: service before self, integrity in public office, respect for democratic institutions, and commitment to national development. His career stands as an inspiration to young Gambians aspiring to serve their country with honor, humility, and distinction.

As he retires from the office of Chief Justice, the People’s Progressive Party expresses its profound gratitude for his decades of dedicated service to the Party, the Government of The Gambia, the legal profession, the judiciary, and the Republic.
