FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STATEMENT ON THE WITHDRAWAL OF PPP NEGOTIATORS FROM THE COALITION MEDIATION COMMITTEE

The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) wishes to inform its members, supporters, stakeholders, and the general public that the Secretary General and Party Leader, Hon. Ousman Madikay Faal, has directed the immediate withdrawal of the Party’s representatives from the Coalition Mediation Committee.

From the outset of the coalition discussions, the Secretary General and Party Leader has consistently maintained that the PPP supports a party-led coalition. This position reflects the Party’s long-standing commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and preserving The Gambia’s multi-party democratic system.

The PPP believes that political parties are the constitutional pillars of representative democracy. A party-led coalition reinforces democratic legitimacy, accountability, institutional stability, and respect for the mandates entrusted to registered political parties by the Gambian people.

Conversely, the Party believes that an independent-led coalition model risks weakening the role of political parties. If adopted as the preferred framework for coalition-building, this model could eventually be replicated in National Assembly and Local Government elections, gradually eroding party identity and weakening the institutional foundations of multi-party democracy. Protecting the central role of political parties, therefore, remains a core principle of the People’s Progressive Party.

Accordingly, the PPP has officially withdrawn from the Coalition Mediation Committee talks. This decision follows careful consideration of the Party’s constitutional principles and its long-term vision for strengthening multi-party democracy. It does not constitute a withdrawal from coalition-building or opposition cooperation. Rather, the Party will continue to engage constructively with registered political parties that share its commitment to a democratic, inclusive, and party-led coalition.

The People’s Progressive Party remains committed to dialogue, constitutionalism, national unity, and principled political engagement in pursuit of a coalition framework that strengthens democratic governance and serves the best interests of The Gambia.
