Honoring a Trailblazer: My Visit with Aunty Ajaratou Yaa Fatou Sonko

I recently had the immense privilege of visiting Aunty Ajaratou Yaa Fatou Sonko, a distinguished leader from the Brikama “Sateba” West Coast Region. It was a profound honor to pay my respects and engage in a meaningful conversation with someone who has made a lasting impact on our political landscape.
Aunty Ajaratou Yaa Fatou Sonko remains a pivotal figure in our political history. As one of the most influential members of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) in the West Coast Region and beyond, her contributions to our nation cannot be overstated.
Learning from a Political Icon
During my visit, my primary goal was to formally introduce myself as the new leader of the PPP and seek her wisdom, prayers, and guidance. I wanted to gain deeper insights into the crucial role the PPP has played in advancing women’s leadership in The Gambia.
Aunty Ajaratou Yaa Fatou Sonko’s political journey is truly inspiring. In 1979, she became the first female president of the PPP and later served as a Justice of the Peace and a counselor for women’s affairs in Kombo East and Kombo Central. Her lifelong commitment to public service and advocacy for women’s empowerment is remarkable.
She graciously shared her experiences, reflecting on the pivotal moments that shaped her career. Her passion for increasing female representation in leadership resonated deeply with me. Her words reinforced the importance of unity, collaboration, and the active involvement of women in shaping our nation’s future.
Strengthening Our Party and Moving Forward
I firmly believe that discussions about unity must go beyond rhetoric—they require genuine engagement with all members of our community. We must foster an atmosphere of collaboration and understanding, ensuring that every voice is heard.
As I approach my third month in this role, these consultative meetings continue to be an invaluable source of inspiration. They reaffirm my belief that the PPP holds a significant place in the hearts and minds of Gambians.
The people-centered policies of the PPP are exactly what The Gambia needs at this critical moment. Our focus must be on uplifting the most disadvantaged members of society and creating sustainable opportunities that allow everyone to thrive.
Gratitude and Call to Action
I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to my National Youth President, Mr. Sir Dawda HE Jarju, for his instrumental role in organizing this important meeting. I was also accompanied by spokesperson Waka Jagne, Alhagie Waka Jobe (member of the Board of Trustees), and Sir Dawda HE Jarju (National Youth President).
I encourage all Gambians to engage with us in shaping the future of our party. Visit www.pppgambia.com to share your feedback, register, and support our movement. Your involvement and contributions will help strengthen the PPP and build a brighter future for our nation.
